Marie-Stéphane Salgas

Born in 1960. Lives and works in Toulouse

A graduate of the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Toulouse, Marie-Stéphane Salgas has worked in print media, street arts, and contemporary art.
A self-taught artist, her photo, audio, and video recordings capture their subjects with a certain nonchalance and a distance that is only apparent, reinforcing their poetic and dramatic dimension. She has participated in several visual art installations and produced experimental videos, notably as part of the Rencontres Internationales Traverse Vidéo. After capturing the “interiors” of migrants on the morning of their deportation, her recent photographic work depicts the slow rehabilitation of a tower block in a rapidly changing neighborhood. With their unique framing, explosive color palettes, and geometric abstraction of reality, her images go beyond the work of memory, weaving an aesthetic that transcends the monolithism of the building, the professional gesture, and the intimacy of the interiors.

Winner of the 2025 grant for the production of an artist's book, “Mémoire d'une tour, récit de chantier” (Memories of a Tower, Story of a Construction Site), from the Occitanie Regional Council.
