Saodat Ismailova

Born in 1981. Lives and works between Paris and Tashkent (Uzbekistan).

Saodat Ismailova develops an artistic practice at the crossroads of film, installation, and research. Trained in cinema and visual arts at the National Institute of Fine Arts in Tashkent and then at Le Fresnoy – National Studio of Contemporary Arts, Saodat Ismailova grew up in the post-Soviet context. She explores the memories, mythologies, and cosmologies of Central Asia, interweaving oral narratives, rituals, and landscapes into the fabric of everyday life. Her works focus on forms of knowledge marginalized by globalized modernity and evolve in liminal spaces, between the visible and the invisible, the documentary and the dreamlike.

In 2021, she initiated Davra, a research collective dedicated to the development of the Central Asian art scene. Her work has been presented at the 59th Venice Biennale and documenta fifteen (2022), and has been recognized by The Eye Art & Film Prize (2022), the Pernod Ricard Foundation's New Program (2025), and the Art Basel Golden Award (2025).
