Smail Kanouté

Born in 1986. Lives and works in Paris.

A 2012 graduate in graphic design from the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs, Smaïl Kanouté is a multidisciplinary artist and globetrotter who combines dance and visual arts.

Self-taught in dance, he explores themes of identity and social narratives. In 2016, he founded the Compagnie Vivons, with which he developed works such as Never Twenty One (2021), Yasuke Kurosan (2022), Bala Funk (2024), and Black Indians (2025) following a residency at the Villa Albertine in 2023. 
These works are supported and presented in institutions such as the Musée d'art contemporain de Lyon, the Maison européenne de la photographie, and the Institut des Cultures d'Islam in Paris. Co-curator of Détours d'un Quartier Monde at the Institut des Cultures d'Islam (2022), Smaïl Kanouté presents Yasuke Walks at the Centre Pompidou as part of Moviment, with the Ateliers Médicis and the Mondes Nouveaux program, followed by the Black Eguns exhibition at Galerie Dix-9 in late 2025.
